A 65-year-old woman is referred to the vascular outpatient clinic because of symptoms suggestive of intermittent claudication. Her cardiovascular risk factors are: former smoking, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypercholesterolemia. She is diagnosed with Fontaine stage IIb peripheral arterial disease (PAD) because of left femoro-popliteal occlusion. In the physical examination, a right carotid bruit is noticed. The patient is neurologically asymptomatic, with no previous history of any cerebrovascular event.
